Tips To Find Calm In The Workplace
The kids are back to school and slowly but surely adjusting to their new early morning schedules and jam-packed after school activities. You’re able to get them up and motivated every day to get on the school bus, but what about you? With the change of seasons, your daily routine has changed in some ways, too.
Change is good, it keeps us on our toes. But oftentimes a change in pace or structure of our day can feel unnerving or overwhelming. The great news is that it doesn’t have to be this way, and there are ways to flip that stress into something more positive as you enter the Fall season. Here are a few ideas to help you exude calm and confidence at work.
Master your schedule
Your at-home, and at-work schedules, that is. Find a morning routine that works for you, and stick to it. Not a morning person? Don’t force yourself to wake up at 4AM to go to the gym. Always rushing out the door? Try making breakfast the night before to take some pressure off your morning activities. Then, familiarize yourself with your work schedule before even getting to the office. Check your calendar for meeting updates, cancellations, and important notices. Don’t let schedule changes bombard you the moment you walk into the office — be prepared. Next, set aside a little quiet time to review your to-do’s and make sure all the important things are captured, like weekly team meetings, submitting reports, and preparing presentations. Ask yourself: Are all these tasks mandatory? Are some more urgent than others? Be clear on what needs to be done, how, and when. (Here are tips on managing time better and life admin hacks.)
Give yourself a break
Don’t be tempted to check messages while on your lunch hour, commute home, or during movie night at home. This is your time... you’ve worked hard and absolutely deserve a time out to be free from work distractions. If you allow yourself small mental breaks throughout the day, or even lunch break with friends, you may find yourself feeling energized and refreshed when you return to work. Even if it just a quick smoothie, nourishing your body and giving your mind a rest will provide some literal soul food to fuel yourself in preparation for the daily challenges that may lie ahead.
Following these simple, quick tips can give you the tools you need to ease into your busy workday. And when your kids are home from school, you’ll be ready to relax and enjoy the evening together instead of feeling tired or burned out.
