Every day, we face a series of small challenges at work and at home. Sometimes it is easy to deal with these one by one as they occur, but when things get really hectic, keeping relaxed can become a challenge in itself.

So when the pressure is on, what do you do? Get flustered? Or keep calm and carry on?

A lot of us would probably admit we let ourselves get flustered. Luckily there are plenty of simple and practical ways to help you stay on top of things and keep relaxed during the day. Here are our best five tips and ideas to help you get the most out of your busy schedule without feeling fazed or frazzled.

1. Plan Ahead

Planning out your workload and activities for the day can help you to stay focused and keep on top of things. Focus on one job at a time and cross it off your to-do list as you go. This will give you a sense of satisfaction at having completed a task and help motivate you to begin the next. Effective planning can also help to keep projects on schedule and you avoid a last minute panic. (See our tips on managing your time better and life admin hacks.)

2. Don’t Worry About the Things You Cannot Change

Worrying about things that you have no control over can lead to stress and anxiety and ruin your day. Instead, focus on the things you can change and take positive action towards improving them as soon as possible. (Related: Understanding when it’s time to let go.)

3. Find the right Relaxation Technique for you

There are many simple relaxation techniques that you can practice at home or at work to help you stay on top of your day. Breathing exercises, meditation, yoga and massage are a few of our favorites, and four mindfulness apps to check out.

4. Get Active

Regular exercise is one of the best ways to relax and lower your stress levels. It doesn’t matter what exercise you choose, just find something that you enjoy and stick to it. Even a brisk walk will do. Just remember to start off slowly and build up to more vigorous exercise over time. Here's a 10-min workout for busy people.

5. Take a Break

When you are rushed off your feet, a break might seem like a luxury you cannot afford. But taking just a few minutes out can really refresh your mind. Try stepping outside for a change of scene and some fresh air to help you to relax, refocus and get back on top of your busy day.

Sometimes you might feel like there are not enough hours in the day, but you can maximize your productivity and reduce stress by taking a few simple steps to manage your time better.
